Statement

Passionately searching for the light found in the enchanted realms and the darkness that awaits in the deepest corners of the kingdom. In the mind, where the fight between consciousness and unconsciousness shall never end. Therefore, characterizing my practice with surrealistic influences. An exploration of its techniques and freedom of thought. Studying animate and inanimate objects, somehow a first impression of these, sometimes of an idea and other times, even from a drawing or a painting, a transformation of a transformation. A perception of an impression of a thought. Accordingly, analysing a verge between consciousness and unconsciousness, giving life to supernatural, bizarre creatures, characterized by the fantastical, paradoxically ornamental, and technological. Transforming, manipulating, and creating new compositions. A surreal uncanniness. Rising from the ashes of our past and revitalizing the legacy of surrealism in the 21st century.

Biography

My name is Rebeca Santos, I as born in 2000, and I am originally from Funchal in Madeira Island, Portugal. I studied Visual Arts in High School, where I graduated as a member of the Honours board. During that period, I had the pleasure of collaborating with fellow friends and artists in the making of murals and exhibitions where I learned to develop my communication and teamwork skills. I’ve also participated in an art summer school in Scotland where I had to accommodate myself with a completely different environment and language, developing my adaptability. I’ve just recently graduated from a Fine Art degree, First Class Honours, at Solent University, in Southampton. During this time, I met a lot of artists who I not only learned from but inspired me immensely. Consequently, being on the progress of developing the creation of an art society, Spilled Coffee Society. I’ve also been interested in making other types of work that would potentially arise, being able to work solo and collaboratively with other artists, problem-solving and quick learning through the way.

My practice is normally expressed in form of drawing and painting, where I mainly try to study the complexities of the unconscious mind. Creating compositions characterized by a manipulation, transformation, and metamorphosis of the surroundings, of ideas, or even of artistic work itself. All with the aim of exploring the unconscious mind and its mysteries, trying somehow to bring change upon the world. Although, more recently I’ve been more focused on the digital arts, creating graphic content that mainly reflects on my personal writings. Journaling a day-to-day type of living focused mainly on a telling of events that reside in the consciousness of life.
